What is GOLDMINE?
An online application that enables visitors to search the Geological Survey of Ireland online data archive database.
What does it provide?
It allows you to find and download full-size resampled pdfs and/or original high resolution TIFF image files.
How do I use GOLDMINE?

The system searches all metadata stored against the document. The system also searches the internal contents of documents. Metadata "hits" are ranked higher than internal document hits so metadata hits will be sorted to the top of the returned search result set.
At the top right of the application is an icon with three gear wheels. Clicking on this will present you with some options to allow you to change things such as background colour and highlight text colour. If you need larger text, then your browser functionality should provide that. Modern browsers, like Chrome, make it very easy to magnify the site to the level you are comfortable with.
Windows 7 and Windows 8 file preview will allow you to open and view multi-page TIFF files. Another good product for Microsoft Windows is available from
IrfanView. For other platforms you can try tdfsoftware.
When there is a choice of download offered between a TIFF and a PDF file, we recommend you download the PDF file. These files are typically much smaller in size but at the same time represent a very high quality resampling of the original TIFF file. The TIFF file does allow itself to be georeferenced if required but otherwise the PDF is the best choice for download.
The maximum download speed you can expect depends on the rate at which you are downloading documents. In order to protect our finite bandwidth, you may find your maximum possible download speed being throttled if you try to download too many large data files within a short time window.

The map allows you to draw a box on a region of interest and find documents that have been located within the box for a chosen category (or all categories). Please note that for some categories, the location of the documents in that category is known to the county level only so the documents returned will be in the county or counties covered by the box you draw. When documents are returned at the county level rather than within the box you draw, a warning window will appear to alert you to this fact.
GOLDMINE is a web application so you never have to worry about updates. Just go to the url provided.
On the search page, select 'Bedrock Field Sheets' from the dropdown and you can include the following search terms to find maps of a particular scale: 6IN 1IN 25IN
On the Search page, select 'Bedrock Map Sheets' from the drop down and then type your name or names into the search box. Examples are: bruck boland slevin Note that when you enter more than one name, the search will look for documents/maps referencing ALL the names. In other words, there is an implicit 'AND' between the search keywords. If you wish to search for maps authored by boland OR slevin, you can search with (the quotes must be included): "boland or slevin"
It is best to drop the apostrophe. For example, to search for Bedrock Map Sheets for Author M.O.O'Sullivan use should select 'Bedrock Map Sheets' from the dropdown and enter: sullivan
The most reliable method for searching by Map Sheet Number is to use wildcarding (%). This is because the map sheet may or may not have appended letters. On the Search page, select 'Bedrock Map Sheets' from the drop down and then type in the first two letter of the county followed by the sheet number and a wildcard. The double quotes (usually above the 2 on your keyboard) are required. Examples are: "CL01%" "GA122%"
On the Search page, select 'Bedrock Map Sheets' from the drop down and then type your county or counties into the search box. Examples are: mayo kildare meath Note that when you enter more than one county, the search will look for documents/maps referencing ALL the counties. In other words, there is an implicit 'AND' between the search keywords. If you wish to search for maps relating to kildare OR meath, you can search with (the double quotes - usually above the 2 on your keyboard - must be included): "kildare or meath"
On the Search page, select 'Bedrock Map Sheets' from the drop down and then combine your search words. Examples are 6in meath jackson 1in mayo macdermot castlebar Note there is an implicit 'AND' between the keywords. i.e. All the keywords must be present in the map's description in order for the map to be selected and returned in the search.
On the search page, select 'Bedrock Maps' from the dropdown and include 6IN or 1IN with your other search terms. For example, the following searches find sheet(s) 42 at 6inch scale for Donegal and sheet 114 at 1inch scale for Clare: 6IN 42 donegal 1IN clare 114
On the search page, select 'Bedrock Maps' from the dropdown and then you can enter in the "colour" or "greyscale" keyword: 6in kerry greyscale 6in kerry colour

Examples are: Du Noyer kinahan kilroe Note that when you enter more than one name, the search will look for documents/maps referencing ALL the names. In other words, there is an implicit 'AND' between the search keywords. If you wish to search for maps authored by kinahan OR kilroe, you can search with (the double quotes - usually above 2 on your keyboard - must be included): "kinahan or kilroe"
It is best to drop the apostrophe. For example, to search Bedrock Maps for Geologist Joseph O'Kelly you should select 'Bedrock Maps' from the dropdown and enter: joseph kelly
On the Search page, select 'Bedrock Maps' from the drop down and then use the following examples as guidance to search by mapsheet 122 clare 1in 46a wexford 6in 9a galway 6in greyscale 100a 6in galway 100a kerry colour Note that the 6in maps often have the letter 'a' appended to the sheet number.

The second will do the same as the first except returning colour instead of greyscale. The third will find all 1 inch colour maps for Mayo. The forth will find 1in map sheet 10 for Donegal. Note there is an implicit 'AND' between the keywords. i.e. All the keywords must be present in the map's description in order for the map to be selected and returned in the search.
A search shortcut has been provided to allow you to achieve this very easily. On the 'Search' page, select 'geotechnical' from the dropdown and then search as in the following examples: reportid=2162 reportid=3016
Each of the returned documents will have a link in it's description. The link is labelled 'Download All Related Documents in One Zip file'. Clicking on this link will download all documents for a given geotechnical report number into one zip file.
A search shortcut has been provided to allow you to achieve this very easily. On the 'Search' page, select 'geotechnical' from the dropdown and then search as in the following examples: mainreportid=2162 mainreportid=3016
